Dr. Christoph Bazil was nominated President of the Federal Monuments Office in June 2019. Born in Vienna in 1969, he studied law at the University of Vienna from 1987 to 1992, where he also achieved a Doctorate in Law in 2001 with a disseration on the Austrian Preservation Law. In 1994, he began working with the public departement of monument protection, where he was appointed Deputy Head in 2005, whithin the former Federal Ministry for Science and Research, . From October 2006 until June 2008, he chaired the Intergovernmental UNESCO Committee on the Hague Convention on the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of War. In 2008, Dr. Bazil was made chairman of the Art Returning Department, before he became Head of the new Department for Monument Protection and Art Restitution Matters, in 2015. Finally, he was nominated President of the Bundendeskmalamt in June 2019.
